All of life’s infinite possibilities must be consigned to its finite moments.
60 seconds to a minute, 60 minutes to an hour and 24 hours to a day.
For time is not our possession.
Nor does it lend itself to being stored or saved.
It is – for all practical purposes – purely on loan.
And its shelf life?
How you choose to honor that loan cuts right to the chase.
It reflects what you love and value: from your allotted time itself, your abilities, your aspirations to all those in your universe.
Every choice you have made – and will make with respect to time – impacts your loan.
As well as that of others.
Decisions that will undoubtedly serve them as well as you.
Reflecting the importance you have assigned to their abilities and aspirations.
And to them.
In the final analysis, what you choose to do with a particular moment – how you spend your allotted time – also necessarily represents a choice you make for others.
And that makes perfect sense.
Since we are all connected.
Just as you have been.
As you are.
And will always be.
This group knows there can be no time granted for half measures, allowances for holding back or an inkling of saving just a little bit of yourself from being fully in this moment.
Each recognizes the senseless nature of rationalization or thinking aimed at self-preservation.
Just ask #2 about that
To this team, nothing mattered but embracing the challenges of the moment.
“Wishing” for success, clinging to the folly of “destiny”, a sleepy complacency, nor an acceptance of “fate” was ever allowed to enter the equation.
There was no fooling yourselves, adhering to an “It worked last time” mindset, or any notion that what and how you did it before was going to be enough this time around.
Absent was any sense of entitlement. That time was obligated to serve your needs – even if you believed: “I deserve just one more chance.”
Those selfish thoughts, words and deeds that can only serve to diminish you – and those around you – were banished.
To a man – none of you accepted any notion that it was reasonable to fit only some of “you” into this moment, squandering the present, shrinking your abilities and limiting your aspirations.
The choice was made.
The die was cast
And it never came to that.
For you are not built that way.
You fully honored the terms of the loan.
Now while time itself may be finite, it does possess some elasticity.
All of your thoughts embracing the infinite possibilities of this moment were made to fit within its confines.
And though the words that will detail your legacy are still being considered, your deeds already became the example for all those that follow and a source of tremendous pride for all those that preceded you.
You chose not to starve – but to eat.
In a moment that had no choice but to grow to accommodate your collective effort and house the performance of a lifetime.
If you reflect and think about it – this too makes perfect sense.
Because nothing this group has done to this point has been small in thought, words or deed.
You have purposely made yourself this big, in a deliberate fashion, precisely to exceed the capacity of this one special moment.
Intentionally welcoming the hardship, sacrifice and the discipline needed to choose, forge and then follow this path.
No small feat.
You have relentlessly pursued excellence on your terms – not just this season, but over the course of many, many seasons – stretching all the way back to grade school.
Not just some random afterthought.
You raised the level of intensity and performance to meet the demands at each and every level and surpass all expectations.
You understood that what you did “then” could not suffice “now”.
And yet you still set the bar higher, knowing each week that you could and would clear it yet again.
Though equipped with diverse and uncommon talents and abilities each of you chose to unite in a singular and common cause.
Knowing the immense value of this moment, recognizing with uncommon clarity – its rarity.
Regarding this as an opportunity of a lifetime – you made this the outcome of your choice.
Capturing this moment within your imagination long ago.
Then making it reality at Camp Randall yesterday afternoon.
Honoring the terms of your loan.
And taking that moment you were built for.
